FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions.

Everything you need to know about embroidery fonts, formats, and machines.

Getting Started

What is an embroidery font generator?

+

An embroidery font generator converts standard text into machine-ready stitch files. Unlike graphic design tools, it builds each letter from individual stitch paths with auto-calculated thread tension, pull compensation, and underlay — ready to load directly onto your embroidery machine.

What is embroidery lettering?

+

Embroidery lettering is text digitized specifically for embroidery machines. Each letter is built from satin stitches, fill stitches, or chain stitches — not pixels or vectors. Good embroidery lettering accounts for fabric type, stitch density, and letter size to produce clean, readable results.

Do I need software to use the files?

+

No. You download the file and transfer it directly to your machine via USB, card, or the machine's built-in software. For BX format, you'll need Embrilliance or compatible software to manage font collections.

File Formats

What file formats are supported?

+

We export BX (Embrilliance, Hatch), PES (Brother, Babylock), DST (universal), JEF (Janome, Elna), and VP3 (Husqvarna Viking, Pfaff). All formats are native — no third-party conversion needed.

What is the difference between BX and PES?

+

PES is Brother's machine format — you load it directly onto your Brother or Babylock machine. BX is a font-collection format for Embrilliance software, allowing you to type text and customize sizing inside the software before sending to the machine. BX gives more flexibility; PES is simpler.

What is DST format and which machines use it?

+

DST (Data Stitch Tajima) is the most universal embroidery format, used by virtually all commercial embroidery machines. It's the best choice if you're unsure which format your machine uses, or if you're sending files to a commercial embroidery shop.

Machine Compatibility

Does this work with Brother machines?

+

Yes. Export PES format for all Brother home embroidery machines (PE series, SE series, Innovis, etc.) and for Babylock machines. The PES file transfers via USB drive or card directly to the machine.

Can I use this with Embrilliance or Hatch?

+

Yes. Export BX format to use the font as a native font inside Embrilliance software. You can then type any text, adjust sizing, and combine with other designs before stitching.

What is the best embroidery font for hats and caps?

+

Bold block fonts and athletic script fonts work best for caps. Thin serifs can collapse at small sizes on curved surfaces. Our generator applies automatic pull compensation for cap hooping so letters arrive correctly sized regardless of fabric tension.

Font Styles

What font styles are available?

+

Free tier includes 30+ styles: script, block, cursive, monogram, appliqué, and chain stitch. Pro tier unlocks 60+ styles including 3D puff, vintage, athletic, collegiate, and specialty decorative fonts.

What is a chain stitch embroidery font?

+

Chain stitch uses looped stitches that interlock in a chain pattern, creating a vintage, handmade look. It's the fastest-growing embroidery style — searches are up 900% year-over-year. Our generator produces proper chain stitch paths compatible with standard home and commercial machines.

What are monogram embroidery fonts?

+

Monogram fonts are designed for 1–3 letter initials, often with interlocking or overlapping letterforms. Our monogram builder generates precise stitch density and overlap paths so letters sit cleanly on fabric without thread buildup at intersections.

Licensing & Pricing

Are the fonts free to download?

+

Yes. The free tier is permanently free with no time limit, no watermarks, and no credit card required. It covers personal use and small commercial use (selling embroidered items you create).

Can I sell items I embroider with these fonts?

+

Yes on both plans. The Free plan allows selling embroidered physical goods. The Pro plan additionally allows reselling the digitized font files themselves and using fonts in commercial production runs.
